The South Yuba Independence Trail is the first identified wheelchair wilderness trail in the United States. This Whole Access wilderness trail is five miles transformed out of the former 1859 Excelsior gold mining flume/canal that winds through the Sierra Nevada foothills abundant with gray pines and live oaks throughout the Yuba River canyon. From the trailhead, the trail meanders 2.5 miles downstream (west) and 2.5 miles upstream (east). The west trail offers a 4.3-mile loop to Jones Bar Road.

Professor Aronnax: "You cannot do this! This is uncivilized!"
Captain Nemo: "I am not what is called a civilized man, professor. I have done with society for reasons that seem good to me, therefore I do not obey its laws."
